No-code (Bubble, Softr, Webflow) vs custom software: when each wins

Use no-code when you need to test an idea this week, the workflow is simple, and you can live with the platform's limits and fees. Build custom when the product is the business, handles serious data or payments, needs to integrate deeply, or has outgrown the tool. Both are legitimate; the mistake is staying on no-code too long or going custom too early.

Choose no-code when

  • You are validating demand and might throw the whole thing away in a month.
  • The app is an internal tool with a handful of users and simple forms and tables.
  • You have no budget yet and time to learn the tool yourself.
  • The public site is a brochure with a few pages and no complex interactions (Webflow does this well).

Choose custom when

  • The product is what customers pay for and its speed, reliability and design are the brand.
  • You handle payments, personal data or anything regulated.
  • You need integrations the platform doesn't offer, or logic it can't express.
  • Platform fees are growing faster than revenue, or you've hit performance and scale limits.
  • You need AI features with your own data, evaluation and cost controls.

Moving from no-code to custom without losing what works

The best no-code apps are excellent specifications: they show exactly what users do and which screens matter. Authect regularly rebuilds Bubble, Airtable and Webflow products into Next.js and Postgres in 4–8 weeks, keeping the flows users already know, exporting the data, and running both in parallel until cut-over. You keep the learning, drop the fees and the ceiling.

Common questions

Is Webflow good enough for a startup marketing site?
Often, yes, for a brochure site with a small team editing it. It becomes limiting when you need top Core Web Vitals scores, complex interactions, many languages, or deep integration with your product. Authect builds marketing sites on Next.js when those things matter, in 3–6 weeks.
How do I know I've outgrown no-code?
Three signs: you spend more time on workarounds than features, platform fees are a noticeable line in your costs, or a customer or investor has asked about security and data location and you couldn't answer well.
Can custom software be as fast to change as no-code?
For the people who own it, yes: a good codebase with a CMS for content changes and tests for logic changes ships daily. The difference is who makes the change. If you want non-technical staff editing content, we include a CMS built for them.
