The 12 best mobile app development companies in 2026

Resumen rápido

Twelve iOS and Android app studios compared on mobile depth, seniority, ownership, reviews, pricing and time-zone fit. Authect publishes this list and is in it, so the ranking criteria and weights are shown in full.

Disclosure first: Authect publishes this list, and Authect is one of the twelve companies in it. To keep that honest, the criteria and their weights are published in How we chose and ranked, every fact about another company comes from its own website or its Clutch profile and is linked in its profile, and two studios with a much longer public record in mobile are ranked above us.

The list is for founders, product owners and CTOs choosing a partner to design and build an iOS and Android app, whether that is a first MVP, a customer app for an established brand, or a rebuild of an app that has outgrown its original code. It focuses on studios that build apps for clients, not app builders or templates. If you have not yet decided between native and cross-platform, read native vs cross-platform app development first; it changes which studios fit.

Ratings, sizes and rates are as listed on each company's Clutch profile in November 2026. Authect has no Clutch profile.

How we chose and ranked

We looked for studios whose own websites show shipped iOS and Android apps for named clients, and that have a verifiable Clutch profile. We left out marketplaces, no-code template shops and firms we could not check. Mobile had to be a real part of each firm's work, not a line on a long services list. Each studio was then scored on the criteria below.

CriterionWhat we looked atWeight
Mobile engineering depthNative iOS and Android, cross-platform (Flutter, React Native, Kotlin Multiplatform), and the release, store and maintenance work around them25 points
Public mobile track recordApps for named clients that the studio shows itself, and how long it has built them15 points
Independent client reviewsClutch rating and the number of reviews behind it15 points
Seniority and accessWho builds the app and whether you deal directly with the people making technical decisions15 points
Ownership and lock-inWhether you own the code, designs, store accounts, signing keys and backend from the start10 points
Pricing transparencyPublished rate bands, minimum project size and clear engagement models10 points
Time-zone and language fitOverlap with working hours in Europe and the Middle East, the main audience of this list10 points
Weights total 100 points.

A ranking compresses a lot into one number. The right studio for a two-person startup is rarely the right one for a national retailer, so read the Best for and Consider notes before the rank. Where Clutch did not display an overall score, we say so rather than estimate one.

1. Droids On Roids

Droids On Roids is a Wrocław mobile and web app studio, now part of Apadmi Group, that has built apps since 2011. Mobile is the core of the business rather than one service among many, and it works across native iOS and Android, Flutter and Kotlin Multiplatform. It ranks first because it combines mobile focus, a long list of named client apps and one of the largest bodies of Clutch reviews in this list.

  • Headquarters: Wrocław, Poland. Part of Apadmi Group.
  • Founded: 2011 (Clutch). Size: 50–249 employees (Clutch).
  • Services: product strategy workshops, discovery and design; native iOS and Android, Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, web and IoT apps.
  • Public work: apps for CCC, Carlsberg (Hoppy), SadaPay, Edenred Polska and Sarwa, among others.
  • Clutch: 4.9 from 78 reviews; $50–99 per hour; minimum project $75,000+.
  • Sources: Droids On Roids website, Droids On Roids on Clutch.

Strengths: deep, mobile-first engineering with a choice of native and cross-platform approaches; experience in fintech, retail and health apps; a large volume of verified reviews. Best for: companies for whom the app is the product, from funded startups to retail brands. Consider: the minimum project size suits a full product build more than a small prototype.

2. hedgehog lab

hedgehog lab is a digital product studio headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne, founded in 2007. It works across strategy, build and ongoing product management, with a record of shipping products in regulated industries. It displays B Corp certification and has 82 verified Clutch reviews behind its rating.

  • Headquarters: Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
  • Founded: 2007 (Clutch). Size: 50–249 employees (Clutch).
  • Services: discovery and strategy, build and migration, and embedded product teams; mobile app development is its largest service line on Clutch.
  • Public work: Dodl, the investing app for AJ Bell; clients and testimonials include Deliveroo, Hiscox and Newcastle City Council.
  • Stated credentials: B Corp; ISO and Crown Commercial Service supplier logos.
  • Clutch: 4.8 from 82 reviews; $100–149 per hour; minimum project $100,000+.
  • Sources: hedgehog lab website, hedgehog lab on Clutch.

Strengths: experience with the compliance demands of financial services and the public sector; a full product lifecycle offer; strong review record. Best for: UK and European organisations in finance, insurance, energy or government that need a consumer app built and then run. Consider: the rate band and minimum project size point to larger engagements; early-stage startups may find it a stretch.

3. Authect

Authect is a founder-led software development studio headquartered in Dubai Silicon Oasis, with a team in Dubai and Spain (Madrid and Marbella) and partners in Lithuania. Mobile apps for iOS and Android are one of its sub-fields within wider software development, so the same team builds the app, its backend and the admin tools behind it. You talk to the founders who build your project, never to a salesperson.

  • Headquarters: Dubai Silicon Oasis, UAE; team in Dubai, Madrid and Marbella; partners in Lithuania.
  • Services: iOS and Android application development and product design, alongside web, SaaS, AI and security work.
  • How work is done: small teams; every project led by a senior engineer; AI-accelerated delivery where an engineer reviews every line.
  • Ownership: clients own the code, infrastructure and designs from day one; no lock-in.
  • Cooperation models: fixed-price projects, monthly sprints, and support and evolution.
  • Clients: across Europe, the Middle East and beyond.
  • Clutch: no profile, so no independent rating to show.

Strengths: direct access to the founders who make technical decisions; ownership of code, designs and infrastructure from the start; working hours that cover both Europe and the Gulf; one team for app, backend and integrations. Best for: startups and mid-size companies in Europe and the Middle East that want a senior team to build an app and the system behind it. Look elsewhere if: you need a 50-person team on day one, a studio with a long public portfolio of named consumer apps and many independent reviews, or a specialist in a niche such as AR headsets; the two studios above have a much longer public mobile record.

4. The Distance

The Distance is a UK app development agency with offices in York and London, founded in 2009. It covers strategy, design, development, testing and maintenance, and has a dedicated offer for SMEs as well as larger brands.

  • Offices: York and London, UK.
  • Founded: 2009 (Clutch). Size: 10–49 employees (Clutch).
  • Services: product design, mobile and web app development, React Native, AI app development, automation and integration, quality and optimisation.
  • Public work: LeShuttle's travel app, GoodShape's employee app and a long-running app for PayStream; logos include NHS, AstraZeneca and Network Rail.
  • Stated credentials: Cyber Essentials.
  • Clutch: 4.8 from 40 reviews; $100–149 per hour; minimum project $25,000+.
  • Sources: The Distance website, The Distance on Clutch.

Strengths: a long-standing focus on apps; long client relationships; an explicit offer for smaller businesses. Best for: UK companies wanting a local agency for a customer, employee or field app. Consider: as a team of 10–49 people, it suits one or two products at a time rather than large parallel programmes.

5. nomtek

nomtek is a Wrocław-based studio founded in 2009 that builds mobile, cross-platform, AR/VR and AI applications. Its spatial computing work, including Apple Vision Pro development, sets it apart from most app studios.

  • Headquarters: Wrocław, Poland (Clutch).
  • Founded: 2009 (Clutch). Size: 50–249 employees (Clutch).
  • Services: discovery and product validation, product design, mobile and Flutter development, AR/VR (including Apple Vision Pro) and AI integration in mobile apps.
  • Public work: clients and case studies include Porsche, Siemens Healthineers, Randstad, Magic Leap and Jägermeister.
  • Stated credentials: ISO 27001; official FlutterFlow developers.
  • Clutch: 4.9 from 44 reviews; $50–99 per hour; minimum project $25,000+.
  • Sources: nomtek website, nomtek on Clutch.

Strengths: unusual depth in AR, VR and spatial apps; flexible team sizes; a lean-startup style of product validation. Best for: brands and startups whose app involves augmented reality, 3D or headsets, as well as conventional mobile work. Consider: for a standard transactional app its AR/VR depth matters less, so compare it on mobile work similar to yours.

6. Netguru

Netguru is a Poznań-based digital product and commerce company founded in 2008 and one of the larger firms in this list. Mobile sits within a wide offer that includes design, commerce platforms, AI and cloud, and its client list is heavy with well-known consumer brands.

  • Headquarters: Poznań, Poland.
  • Founded: 2008 (Clutch). Size: 250–999 employees (Clutch).
  • Mobile stack: iOS (Swift), Android (Kotlin), React Native, Flutter and Kotlin Multiplatform.
  • Public work: case studies for Delivery Hero, Metro Brazil (a cross-platform app) and UBS (a mobile app redesign); clients include IKEA, Volkswagen and Careem.
  • Stated credentials: B Corp; partnerships with Microsoft and AWS.
  • Clutch: 4.8 from 73 reviews; $50–99 per hour; minimum project $50,000+.
  • Sources: Netguru website, Netguru on Clutch.

Strengths: capacity to staff mobile, web, commerce and design together; a strong roster of brand clients; every major mobile stack covered. Best for: established companies running mobile as part of a broader digital or commerce programme. Consider: its current positioning leans towards digital commerce, so for a standalone startup app compare it with the mobile-first studios above.

7. Fueled

Fueled is a New York agency founded in 2007 that builds apps and digital products for some of the best-known brands in the US. Alongside mobile it runs an enterprise WordPress practice through 10up.

  • Headquarters: New York, US (Clutch).
  • Founded: 2007 (Clutch). Size: 250–999 employees (Clutch).
  • Services: digital strategy, iOS and iPadOS apps, AI, enterprise web and WordPress, and growth.
  • Public work: clients shown include Apple, Google, Microsoft, The New York Times and Warby Parker; case studies include gamified experiences for Apple with EMEA carriers.
  • Clutch: 4.9 from 38 reviews; $150–199 per hour; minimum project $75,000+.
  • Sources: Fueled website, Fueled on Clutch.

Strengths: a premium design and engineering record with top-tier brands; strength across apps and content-heavy web. Best for: large US consumer brands that want a polished flagship app. Consider: it has the highest hourly band in this list, and its centre of gravity is the US market.

8. thoughtbot

thoughtbot is a design and development agency founded in 2003, which maintains open-source projects and publishes much of its thinking. Its team is spread across the Americas, Europe, West Asia and Africa, and it focuses on products in high-stakes, regulated fields such as healthcare and finance.

  • Headquarters: New York, US (Clutch); team distributed across several continents.
  • Founded: 2003 (Clutch). Size: 50–249 employees (Clutch).
  • Services: mobile and web development, Ruby on Rails, product design, design sprints, MVP development, accessibility and team augmentation.
  • Public work: a new mobile app for Harvard Business Review and a multi-platform care product for CloseKnit Health; clients include Kickstarter, Mailchimp and GOV.UK.
  • Clutch: 39 reviews (the profile did not display an overall score when checked); $150–199 per hour; minimum project $10,000+.
  • Sources: thoughtbot website, thoughtbot on Clutch.

Strengths: strong product and design thinking; a culture of open source and published knowledge; healthcare experience. Best for: teams that want help shaping the product as much as building it, and organisations that value accessibility. Consider: web development is a larger share of its work than mobile, and its hourly band is at the top of this list.

9. Holdapp

Holdapp is a Wrocław studio founded in 2012 that focuses almost entirely on apps. It builds native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) as well as Flutter and Kotlin Multiplatform apps, with particular experience in eCommerce, sports betting and iGaming.

  • Headquarters: Wrocław, Poland.
  • Founded: 2012 (Clutch). Size: 10–49 employees (Clutch).
  • Services: native and cross-platform mobile apps, web apps, product design workshops, UX and code audits, QA and staff augmentation.
  • Public work: apps for Answear, forBET and Sprzedajemy.pl; clients include Universal Music Group and Nordisk Film; Mobile Trends Awards winner in 2021 and 2025.
  • Clutch: 4.9 from 25 reviews; $50–99 per hour; minimum project $10,000+.
  • Sources: Holdapp website, Holdapp on Clutch.

Strengths: a near-total focus on mobile; experience with high-traffic commerce and betting apps; an accessible minimum project size. Best for: retailers and gaming or betting operators that need a fast, stable app. Consider: a small team suits one product at a time, and its sector experience is concentrated in commerce and gaming.

10. Purrweb

Purrweb is a design-led app and web studio founded in 2014, with its registered office in Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE. It specialises in getting MVPs to market quickly with React Native, Flutter and a strong UI/UX practice.

  • Registered office: Al Hamra Industrial Zone, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.
  • Founded: 2014 (Clutch). Size: 50–249 employees (Clutch).
  • Services: iOS, Android and cross-platform apps (React Native, Flutter), MVP and SaaS development, UI/UX design and UX audits, AI features.
  • Public work: case studies including Energo (power bank rental), KEM (mobile payments in Kuwait) and WAW (an app for the Egyptian market).
  • Stated practices: NDAs signed on request before the first meeting; external code audits and handover to in-house teams.
  • Clutch: 4.9 from 46 reviews; $25–49 per hour; minimum project $5,000+.
  • Sources: Purrweb website, Purrweb on Clutch.

Strengths: the lowest minimum project size on this list; design and development under one roof; MVP experience in Gulf and wider Middle East markets. Best for: early-stage founders who need a well-designed MVP quickly and on a modest budget. Consider: as with any MVP-first studio, agree early how the app will be scaled and handed over once it has users.

11. Uptech

Uptech is a product development company founded in 2016. Clutch lists its headquarters in Kyiv, while its website lists Los Angeles. It builds mobile, web and AI products, with most of its published work in fintech, healthcare and consumer apps.

Strengths: startup product experience including discovery and MVPs; consumer apps at scale; competitive rates. Best for: venture-backed startups in fintech, health or commerce. Consider: delivery is centred in India, so confirm who leads your project day to day and where the team sits.

How to choose the right mobile app development company

Shortlist two or three studios whose focus matches your app, then judge them on how they work, not on their portfolio alone. Our guide to mobile app development services explains the stages and deliverables in more depth.

  1. Decide what the first release must do. A short, prioritised feature list keeps quotes comparable. See how to scope an MVP without wasting budget.
  2. Choose native or cross-platform with the studio, not after. Ask why they would recommend one for your app; a studio that only offers one approach will always recommend it.
  3. Look at apps in the stores, not just case-study pages. Download two or three of a studio's apps and check reviews, update history and how they feel on an older phone.
  4. Confirm the backend is covered. Most apps need an API, admin tools, notifications, analytics and payments; agree who builds and runs them.
  5. Secure your accounts. Your company should own the Apple and Google developer accounts, signing keys, repositories and cloud accounts from the start.
  6. Plan for life after launch. Operating system updates arrive every year; agree how maintenance and support will work and what it includes.
  7. Check the overlap in working hours and the languages your users need, including right-to-left layouts if you need Arabic.
  8. Compare the people, not just the price. Ask who will build the app and talk to them before signing.

Questions to ask on the first call

  • Which app you have built is closest to ours, and can we download it?
  • Would you build this natively or cross-platform, and why?
  • Who will work on our app, and how senior are they? Can we meet them before we sign?
  • How do you handle App Store and Google Play review, releases and crash monitoring?
  • Whose names will the developer accounts, repositories and cloud accounts be in?
  • What does support cost and cover after launch, including yearly iOS and Android updates?
  • How do you price the work: fixed price, sprints or hourly, and what usually changes the estimate?

Which type of app partner fits

Freelancers

Fine for a prototype or a small, well-defined app. Lower cost, but design, backend, testing and store releases often depend on one person, and continuity is the main risk.

Boutique studios

Small senior teams that build the app, backend and design together, often with founders involved. Fast decisions and direct access; limited when you need several squads at once. Holdapp, The Distance and Authect are examples here.

Mid-size agencies

Firms of 50–249 people such as most studios on this list. They can run discovery, design, development and QA with dedicated roles and handle more than one product in parallel.

Large consultancies

Hundreds of people across many disciplines. Suited to large brands running mobile inside wider digital or commerce programmes; budgets and the distance between you and the builders are both larger.

The best app studio for you is the one whose last three apps look most like your next one.

Want a rough sense of effort before you talk to anyone? Our software cost calculator estimates team shape and weeks for typical app builds.

Preguntas frecuentes

How do I choose between native and cross-platform development?

Native (Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android) gives the most direct access to device features and platform conventions but means two codebases. Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter, React Native and Kotlin Multiplatform share most code between platforms and suit most business and consumer apps. Heavy graphics, deep hardware use or very platform-specific design push towards native. Ask each studio to explain its recommendation for your app specifically.

How much does it cost to build a mobile app with an agency?

The studios on this list publish Clutch hourly bands from $25–49 to $150–199 per hour and minimum projects from $5,000 to $100,000 or more. The total depends on scope: the number of screens and user roles, the backend and integrations, payments, offline use, and design polish. Ask for an estimate broken down by phase and team shape, not just a single figure.

Why is Authect ranked third on its own list?

Authect publishes the list, so it says so at the top and shows its criteria. On those criteria Droids On Roids and hedgehog lab have a much longer public record of named mobile apps and independent reviews, so they rank higher. Authect scores well on seniority, direct access to the founders, ownership from day one and time-zone fit for Europe and the Middle East.

Who should own the app store accounts and code?

You should. Your company should hold the Apple Developer and Google Play accounts, the signing keys, the code repositories and the cloud accounts from the start, with the studio given access. That way you can change partners or bring work in-house without rebuilding or republishing the app.

How long does it take to build a mobile app?

A focused MVP with a handful of core flows and a simple backend often takes a few months; larger apps with payments, many integrations or complex roles take longer. Discovery and design usually take a few weeks before development starts. Store review, testing on real devices and fixing what beta users find should be part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Do I need a local app development company?

Not necessarily, but you need enough overlap in working hours for quick decisions, and local knowledge if your app depends on regional payment providers, languages or regulations. For Arabic-language apps, check that the studio has built right-to-left interfaces before.

What happens after the app is launched?

Apps need ongoing work: fixes from crash reports, updates for new iOS and Android versions, store requirement changes, security patches and new features based on user feedback. Agree a support arrangement before launch and budget for it. Our maintenance and support guide covers what to include.
