E-commerce Software Development

We design and build online stores, marketplaces, checkouts and the commerce systems behind them, for D2C brands and B2B sellers, with the founders writing the code.

What you get with Authect's e-commerce software development

An online store is judged in seconds: how fast the page loads, whether search finds the right product, and how easily the checkout lets someone pay. Authect builds every part of that journey, from the storefront to the order, payment and fulfilment systems that sit behind it. You talk to the founders who build your project, and every engagement is led by a senior engineer rather than handed to an account manager.

We work with the platforms you already trust, such as Shopify Plus, commercetools, BigCommerce or Adobe Commerce, and build custom where they stop fitting your business. Delivery is AI-accelerated, with an engineer reviewing every line before it ships, so you get speed without code nobody understands.

From the first day, you own the code, the infrastructure and the designs. Repositories, cloud accounts and design files sit in your name, so you can grow the team, change partners or bring the work in-house whenever it suits you.

How we help e-commerce businesses grow

  1. 01

    Turn more sessions into orders

Quick pages, relevant search results and a short, trustworthy checkout remove the small frictions that make shoppers abandon a basket and buy somewhere else.

  2. 02

Change the store without waiting on developers

Composable architecture and a well-modelled content system let merchandisers launch campaigns, landing pages and promotions themselves, while engineers focus on new capabilities.

  3. 03

    Add channels and markets cleanly

Multi-currency pricing, localised content, tax rules and marketplace feeds are designed into the platform, so opening a new country or channel is configuration rather than a rebuild.

  4. 04

    Keep customers coming back

Subscriptions, accounts, personalised recommendations and well-timed messages through tools such as Klaviyo turn first purchases into lasting relationships with your brand.

The e-commerce solutions we build

Whether you are a D2C brand outgrowing its first theme, a seller launching a marketplace or a wholesaler moving trade orders online, we take you from discovery through design, engineering and launch to ongoing support, with a founder accountable throughout.

  1. Headless and composable storefronts

Fast front ends on top of commerce APIs, with content, search and payments chosen as separate services you can swap as your needs change.

  2. Checkout and payment flows

Single-page checkouts, wallets, buy now pay later and local payment methods through providers such as Stripe or Adyen, with fraud screening and clear error recovery.

  3. Marketplace platforms

Seller onboarding, listings moderation, split payments, commissions and payouts, with dashboards that let sellers run their own shops on your marketplace.

  4. Subscription commerce

Recurring orders, flexible delivery schedules, pause and skip controls, and billing that handles failed renewals gracefully instead of losing the subscriber.

  5. Order management and fulfilment integrations

Order routing, split shipments, returns portals and connections to warehouses, third-party logistics and carriers, with tracking updates sent to the customer.

  6. B2B ordering portals

Trade accounts with negotiated price lists, quick reorder, quotes, approval workflows and payment on account, built for buyers who order in volume.

Our e-commerce domain expertise

D2C brands and online stores

Online stores for brands that sell directly to their customers, from a polished Shopify or Shopify Plus build to a fully custom storefront. We design product pages that tell the brand's story without slowing the page down, set up bundles, gift options and pre-orders, and connect email, reviews and analytics tools so every campaign can be measured. As the brand grows, we extend the store with apps and custom features instead of forcing an early replatform.

Marketplaces

Multi-seller platforms where the hard problems are trust and money. We build seller sign-up and verification, catalogue rules that keep listings consistent, and search that ranks products from many sellers fairly. Split payments, commissions, refunds and payouts run through payment providers built for marketplaces, and moderation tools, seller ratings and dispute handling help your operations team keep standards high as more sellers join.

Headless and composable commerce

Separating the storefront from the commerce engine so each part can be chosen and changed on its own. We help you decide whether headless is worth it for your business, then build front ends on top of platforms such as commercetools, BigCommerce or Shopify, alongside a content system, search and payments selected for the job. Careful caching, server rendering and image handling keep the extra flexibility from costing page speed.

Checkout, payments and subscriptions

The steps where revenue is won or lost. We build checkouts with guest purchase, address lookup, saved cards and digital wallets, and integrate payment providers such as Stripe and Adyen, with strong customer authentication and fraud checks handled by the provider so card data never touches your servers. For subscription products we add recurring billing, dunning for failed payments and self-service account controls that make cancelling less likely.

B2B e-commerce

Online ordering for wholesalers, distributors and manufacturers whose customers buy on account. We model company accounts with several buyers and approvers, customer-specific catalogues and price lists, minimum order quantities and quote requests, then connect it all to your ERP so stock, credit limits and invoices stay accurate. Bulk order forms, reorder lists and spreadsheet uploads save trade buyers from typing long orders by hand.

Search, product data and AI merchandising

Helping shoppers find the right product in a large catalogue. We clean up and structure product information so filters and comparisons work, set up search with tools such as Algolia or a custom engine that understands synonyms and typos, and add AI where it earns its place: recommendations, generated product copy for review, and ranking that merchandisers can steer with their own rules and boosts.

How we work

Our approach to e-commerce software development

  1. 01

    Discovery and audit

A founder leads the first sessions, reviewing your current store, analytics, platform and integrations. We identify where shoppers drop off and where the tech is holding the team back, then give you a written plan and a fixed price for the first phase.

  2. 02

    Architecture and platform choice

We recommend a platform, a headless or theme-based front end, and the services around it, explaining the trade-offs in cost, flexibility and effort to run, so the decision is yours and made with clear information.

  3. 03

    Design and prototyping

Category pages, product pages, basket and checkout are prototyped and tested with shoppers on their own phones, so problems with navigation, trust or payment are fixed before they reach production.

  4. 04

    Build, test and integrate

A senior engineer leads the build in short iterations, using AI tools to move faster while reviewing every line. Payment, order and fulfilment integrations are tested against realistic scenarios, with performance checked on every release.

  5. 05

    Launch and migration

We move products, customers and order history across, map old URLs to new ones to protect search rankings, and launch away from your key sales dates, with monitoring on checkout and orders from the first hour.

  6. 06

    Optimise and grow

After launch the same team keeps improving the store: running experiments on key journeys, tuning speed, adding markets and channels, and building the features your next stage of growth needs.

Why develop your e-commerce software with Authect

  • You talk to the founders who build it

No sales layer between you and the work. The founders scope your store, a senior engineer leads every project, and the people you speak to on day one are the people shipping your checkout.

  • Faster delivery, reviewed by engineers

We use AI tools to speed up delivery, but nothing reaches your store without an engineer reviewing every line, so you get pace without fragile code or surprises during your busiest weeks.

  • Yours from day one

Code, infrastructure, platform accounts and designs belong to you from the start. No proprietary framework and no lock-in: any capable team can pick up the work, and we document it so they can.

E-commerce software development FAQs

What does e-commerce software development cover?

It covers everything needed to sell online: the storefront and mobile experience, product catalogue and search, basket, checkout and payments, accounts and subscriptions, and the order, fulfilment and ERP integrations behind them. For marketplaces and B2B sellers it also includes seller management, trade pricing and approval workflows.

Should we go headless or stay on a theme-based platform?

A theme-based store on a platform such as Shopify is often the quickest and most cost-effective option, especially for a growing D2C brand. Headless pays off when you need a highly custom experience, several storefronts on one backend, or content and commerce that a theme cannot combine well. We look at your plans and budget and recommend honestly, including when headless is not worth it.

Which platforms and tools do you work with?

We work with commerce platforms such as Shopify, Shopify Plus, commercetools, BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce, payment providers such as Stripe and Adyen, search tools such as Algolia and marketing tools such as Klaviyo. We are independent of all of them, so our recommendation is based on what fits your business.

Can you migrate our store without losing search rankings or data?

Yes. We plan migrations around redirects for every old URL, carry over product, customer and order data with checks at each step, and keep structured data and page speed at least as good as before. We rehearse the move, launch at a quiet time and monitor search and sales closely afterwards.

How do you keep checkout and customer data secure?

Card details are handled by the payment provider, so they never pass through your servers. We add strong authentication for accounts, bot and fraud protection, encryption of personal data and regular dependency updates, and we design for PCI DSS and GDPR alongside your advisers, who remain responsible for your compliance.

Who owns the store once it is built?

You do, from day one. The code sits in your repositories, the infrastructure and platform accounts are in your name, and the design files are yours. You are free to keep working with us, build an in-house team or hand the work to another partner.

Tell us what you’re building. A founder replies within one working day, and builds it with you.

We will add your details to our CRM so we can contact you about your request. For more information, read our privacy policy.
